The day finished out the way it started.
A great spring day in Wellington. It's true. You can't beat wellington on a good day! The sun was out the sea was flat it was going to make for a great time for young and old. The day was a fundraiser for Project K. There was up to 20plus teens there with their mentors and a great turn out from the public.
Also the Specifics Training Group team there to help out.
Chris Brown was the organiser for this outstanding day. Well done mate!
The morning started around 11am with thunder cats racing the first of 4 races of the day, the speed and agility of these boats make it an amazing spectator sport. Five laps around a close to shore circuit meant everyone could easily see the race.
After each race the thunder cats took the Project K teens out for an experience co-piloting a race boat first hand.
As that was going on it was my turn. The Strongman comp.
With the Specifics Training Team made up of Karen on the camera, Kirsten and Jo going out and recruiting people to sign up for the Strongman competition and also collecting money for the worthy Project k cause.
There was Victoria with her sharp eye looking out for potential new clients, Steph and Simon doing the time keeping and counting in the events.
Round one was to be a big test of strength and cardio. Each contestant had to flip an 85kg tyre for the very keen and a 35kg tyre as many times as they could within two minutes. With 17 people signed up it was all on.
Darren took it out with 15 flips, Al Lang coming a close second with 13flips and Shane Timperley third with 11 flips. The 35kg tyre was taken out by Benzi with an amazing 31 flips followed by Jo Wilmott with28 and Kirsten Lang a very close 25, a huge effort by all that took this challenge on WELL DONE!!.
Next on the agenda was a Jet Ski race.
I don't know what speeds these Jet Skis get up to but it was very cool and very fast. The crowd loved it and the public got the chance with a gold coin donation get to go for a ride on these speed machines.
Round Two of the strong man was the Power Bag Straight arm endurance hold. It might look easy but ask any of the contenders they might say something else. The 10kg hold was taken out by Rocky with 2.01 min, and then a very close 2nd 1.54min by Al Lang and Dave Orem showed a strong 1.48min.
The 5kg hold was taken out by Nick Blackmore with a great hold of 1.52min followed by Kirsten Lang with 1.37min and Emma with a strong 1.25min.
As all this was going on the Demon Energy team where doing a great job selling drinks, working the BBQ and they had the Demon Fighter suites there which was great fun for young and old raising money for the day. After the next round of racing from the thunder cats it was time for the tug of war.
Ask yourself when was the last time you had a go of tug of war? Don't know about you but for me it's been too long. This would have to be my favourite and seemed to be for lots more. We had over 50 people sign up for this one. There was one on ones, Blondes vs Brunettes, Kids taking on Rocky (the kids won), and families' vs families. Lots of fun was had by all.
The last round for the strong man fundrasier day was the fire truck pull, over 30 meters. Al Lang and Rocky, Specifics Team, the Blackmore Family, the Demon girls and a good numbers of very keen people took on this challenge. A Seven tonne fire truck on a slight up hill is not an easy thing to move. Well done to all.
Over all a great day on Petone Beach. A great course for the teens. Well done to Chris Brown and the rest of the team that made this day great.
And a big thank you to the Specifics Team for giving up your day to help.
Shane Tindall.
